Proposal info

  • The Petition goes LIVE on September 1st, 2023.
  • Start by downloading the PDF files that are available below.
  • Purchase "legal size" 20# white paper which is 8.5" X 14" for CIRRRA (electronic signature gathering) petition! (Note: Regular size paper can't be used for this petition, so we recommend using a local print shop to print!)
  • The CALMSEA petition also requires "legal size" 20# white paper which is 8.5" X 14" paper, recommended to use local print shop to print!
  • Set printer settings (on your printer menu) to print on 8.5" X 14" paper for CIRRRA and CALMSEA. The final document for both will fit the full page leaving a 1" margin at the top and a 1/4" margin on sides and at the bottom. Printing PDF to "Actual Size" on most printers gives these margins
    • Make sure your printer is set up properly to print a black and white document and is printing clean and clear images. (Note: streaks, smudges, smears, double images, blurred, faded print, torn paper, and any flaws in general are not acceptable. Petitions must be clean and uniformly printed with clear writing to be considered legal.)
    • Make sure paper is loaded properly and feeding evenly into the printer evenly.
    • Open the PDF file in your computer PDF reader program and click on print, then go to print settings.
    • It is a two page document that must be printed on one sheet of paper. (Front to back.)
    • It is important to select "fit to page" otherwise the image will not fit the 8.5" X 14" paper with the legal 1" top margin requirement.
    • Some printers will print two sided front to back and as long as the document flips along the long edge like reading a book it is being printed correctly. (If printing one side at a time it will be very important to make sure the top of each page has a 1 inch margin so flipping and feeding is up to how your printer works. If printing multiple sheets one side at a time then it is best to print all one side first, then flip the stack together and then print all of the back in the second run. Test print a page to make sure each petition is printing properly before printing the entire stack.)
    • If this is all too difficult to make work, or if printing lots of petitions, it may be best to simply find an inexpensive print shop and pay them to do it right! They will set the print to "Actual Size" but make sure the final copy has a 1" top Margin. A single petition is not a big deal cost wise, but when printing in bulk, it is best to shop around

    • Contact us if you have any questions!
  • Age Requirement: Signature collectors must be at least 18 years old. This is a legal requirement and non-negotiable.
  • County Specific: Each petition page must only contain signatures from registered voters of a specific County. This is to ensure accurate tracking and representation.
  • Accurate Voter Info: The signature, name, and address of voters must match the data in the California Secretary of State's records. Verify this information before accepting a signature to ensure it's counted.
  • No Duplication: Absolutely no double or duplicate signatures. Remind potential repeat signers that signing more than once is illegal. Prioritize certainty over quantity.
  • Address Rules: P.O. boxes are not acceptable. Use only the current physical address of the registered voter, which is crucial for validation.
  • Pen Specifications: Only use a blue or black ballpoint pen to ensure legibility and consistency. Do not use other pen types or colors, as this could invalidate the signature.
  • Space Usage: Never write in the "official use only" space. If a voter's handwriting isn't clear, use the specified left space to reprint the information, ensuring it's identifiable.
  • Mistakes: If there's a mistake, tear the petition and start anew. Minimize errors by orienting people before they sign.
  • Witnessing Signatures: All signatures must be witnessed by the collector, unless a voter signs and fills out their declaration section. Petition circulators can sign their circulating petition once, in the first petition only. Complete the Declaration section accurately.
  • Queries and Returning Petitions: Use our website, contact pages, and our provided mailing address for all your questions and for returning the electronic signed petitions. Ensuring accurate communication will streamline the process.
Remember that the goal isn't just to get as many signatures as possible but to ensure each one counts. While you may be tempted to combine voter registration with collecting signatures, this can complicate the process. Focus on individuals who are already registered and have accurate information. As you fill out each petition, be mindful to maintain its validity.
